Instructional designers utilize educational best practices and innovative technology to develop training materials. They directly address learning outcomes to create a training that will be extremely beneficial to your organization in the long run. “They make sure your learners absorb, retain, and recall your training program. And they not only design from scratch or redesign course content but also online learning strategies” (You Might Need… ELM Learning, 2022).
Here are just a few of the many ways that any organization will benefit from hiring an instructional designer:
When creating a training, many people do not think about how long the content will be relevant. Instructional designers think about the longevity of their content when putting it in a course, and organize it in a way that it can be easily updated. Keeping content up to date is critical to avoid confusion, and keep the training effective for the learner, and the organization as a whole.
Instructional designers create curriculums that are intended to address learning outcomes and increase productivity, “When it doesn’t, the program wastes learners’ time and effort while wasting your company’s resources” (You Might Need… ELM Learning, 2022). Instructional designers put a lot of thought into the activities that they design for the learner, and often develop hands-on activities. For example, a scenario activity that teaches the learner how to react in specific situations allows the learner to take that skill and apply it directly to their day to day tasks. “The faster employees gather all the necessary information, the quicker they can apply it to their everyday work” (Tieger, 2023).
When you combine the longevity of a course and increased productivity among workers, it is clear to see how instructional design can increase your ROI. “Instructional Designers take a very methodical approach to defining the curriculum plan, taking the time to hone in on the training needs that will create the greatest ROI. This means organizations avoid spending money on training that won’t generate behavior change” (What Is Instructional Design and Why Is It Important?, 2021). In general, instructional designers focus on training that will be effective and efficient for the audience. Cutting out unnecessary content allows the training to be more cost effective for you, and more timely for the learner.
